Route description
The route is circular, looping around the rocky massif of the Peñas del Masmut. The starting point is on Calle del Sol, which begins at the Plaza de la Iglesia. It starts along the Camino de Vallibona, the path along which, every seven years, a pilgrimage arrives from that Castellón village. The route crosses a zone of small rock shelters and stone constructions built into the rock, which were once used to house various livestock. A short distance ahead, a path branches off to the left, leading to the 'Aragonese park of rural dwellings', featuring a recreation of various traditional buildings from the past.
The Rocas del Masmut is one of the symbols of Peñarroya de Tastavins and the source of countless literary references, poems and legends. It is an impressive monolith with vertical walls over one hundred metres high, presenting different shapes and perspectives on its north and south faces. It stands at an altitude of 1,058 metres and was formed during the Palaeogene period from the first materials eroded from the mountain massif, consisting of conglomerates, sandstones and clays.
The name may derive from the toponym 'Masmuda', a Berber tribe from Morocco believed to have settled in this territory during the period of Arab occupation.
On the northwest side of the rocks there is a large colony of vultures. From the summit of these rocks, the spectacular beauty of the surroundings can be fully appreciated. On the south face there are climbing routes of over 150 metres.
