Route description
The route passes through an essentially mountainous territory that offers a great variety of landscapes defining the Matarraña comarca: terra, riu i muntanya (land, river and mountain, as the poet Desideri Lombarte described it).
Over 82.28 km it links the villages of Cretas, Valderrobres, Fuentespalda, Peñarroya de Tastavins, Torre de Arcas and Monroyo. From Cretas, the route also connects with the Vía Verde and the IE-015.
Cretas to Valderrobres section (18.9 km)
From the old railway station we head towards the southwestern part of Cretas. After crossing the Vía Verde Val de Zafán again, we soon see the hermitage of Los Santos. In about 5 km we reach Valderrobres, having crossed the Matarraña river.
Valderrobres to Fuentespalda section (18.18 km)
From the Gothic quarter of Valderrobres we enter a Mediterranean landscape. After the turnoff towards El Salt, we pass in front of the hermitage of San Pedro Mártir, then ascend to Fuentespalda.
Fuentespalda to Peñarroya section (14.19 km)
We leave from the Fuentespalda campsite along the GR-8, pass through the Coveta de l'Aigua (a karstic cave) and an old tile kiln. From here the Tastavins river accompanies us until we reach the Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Fuente.
Peñarroya to Torre de Arcas section (13.91 km)
From the Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Fuente, the path leads us towards the Tastavins river. We climb towards the Mas de la Serra, beside a holm oak. Leaving behind the Punta de La Cogulla and La Camiseta, we begin the descent towards Torre de Arcas, passing the hermitage of San Bernardo.
Torre de Arcas to Monroyo section (17.39 km)
The holm oaks around the hermitage of San Bernardo give way to pine forest. Our route follows the ravine of Torre de Arcas, where we meet the GR-8. We ascend close to the PR-170 until we reach Monroyo.
