Discover the majesty of the Portal de Sapera in Cretas
The Portal de Sapera is an architectural structure of great artistic richness and a fascinating blend of Gothic and Renaissance elements. This iconic passageway is formed by two parallel pointed arches joined by a wooden structure decorated with a plaster vault featuring delicate motifs of grapes and leaves, a reflection of local tradition and art.
Architectural and artistic details
Above these arches stands a residential building constructed in ashlar masonry, a technique that denotes solidity and durability. The building features a small moulding at the sill level of an impressive Gothic mullioned window. A mullioned window is characterised by its multiple openings separated by a central column, a distinctive feature of Gothic art.
The Gothic window is exquisitely decorated with a carved hood mould, crowned at each end by two sculpted heads, adding a touch of mystery and character to the façade. The building also features an elegant and richly decorated wooden eaves, complementing the overall aesthetic of the ensemble.
Fusion of styles and evolution
The construction extends along the same façade with a round-arch doorway and a gallery containing four round-arch openings, showing a harmonious transition between Gothic and Renaissance styles. On the opposite side, however, the original arch has been altered by the construction of a brick balcony, an addition that bears witness to the adaptations and evolutions of the building over time.
The Portal de Sapera is, without doubt, an exceptional example of the artistic and architectural richness of Cretas and the entire Matarraña region, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its history and admire its singular beauty.
