The medieval walls of Cretas
Explore the vestiges of a fortified past in Cretas, Matarraña. Discover the ancient town gates and wall sections that are still preserved, witnesses to the rich history of the town.
A walk through the defensive history of Cretas
The charming town of Cretas, situated in the heart of the Matarraña, treasures within its streets a valuable legacy of its medieval past: the remains of its ancient walls. This defensive system, vital in times of uncertainty, protected the settlement and its inhabitants, leaving today a tangible testimony of centuries of history.
Although time and urban development have transformed much of these fortifications, we can still admire three of the five town gates that, according to studies, marked the walled perimeter. Built with the robust ashlar masonry characteristic of the region and defined by elegant round arches, these gates are true architectural gems:
The lost gates and the preserved sections
The memory of the walls also holds the recollection of two gates that have not survived to our day: the Portal de San Juan, located on the eastern flank next to the church, and the Portal del Pilar, situated to the north and demolished in the 1930s to facilitate road access to the town, thus reflecting the adaptation of the settlement to modern times.
Despite these losses, several sections of the ancient walled precinct are preserved, offering a clear picture of the scale of the medieval defences. A segment connected to the Portal de San Roque stands out, and opposite the Portal de Valderrobres, a section known locally as 'La Barana'. These vestiges invite visitors to imagine life in medieval Cretas and to understand the importance of these structures in shaping the urban landscape of the Matarraña.
Town gates of the walls
The Portal de San Roque
A curious structure that fuses the defensive and religious functions, serving as both an entrance and a small chapel.
The Portal de San Antonio
Another example of a chapel gate, showing the integration of faith into daily life and the protection of the town.
The Portal de Valderrobres
Strategically oriented towards the important town of Valderrobres, it was one of the main entry and exit gates of Cretas.
Did you know that the walls of Cretas had five town gates?
Originally, the town of Cretas was provided with five access gates. However, only three of them (San Roque, San Antonio and Valderrobres) have survived the test of time, while the Portal de San Juan and the Portal del Pilar were demolished. This fact highlights the urban evolution and the strategic importance of these fortifications in the Matarraña.
Defensive architecture and urban adaptation
The construction of the walls and their gates in Cretas reflects medieval fortification techniques, making use of the robust ashlar masonry characteristic of the Matarraña. The round arches not only provided solidity but also an aesthetic element to the entrance of the town. The adaptation of modern urban planning, such as the demolition of the Portal del Pilar, illustrates the constant tension between heritage conservation and the development needs of settlements. Even so, the preserved sections and the gates we admire today are a living testimony to the history and architectural resilience of Cretas.
