The Font de la Barra is a remarkable and peculiar construction, set at a level below the ground in the picturesque village of Cretas. Its design allows part of its wall to protrude, creating a unique silhouette in the landscape. This historic fountain is characterised by its three ashlar walls, of varying heights, and a fourth wall that serves as a cobbled access ramp, making it easy to approach its spring.
An architectural gem with history
The front face of the fountain houses the water outlet, beautifully framed by a round arch, an architectural detail that evokes its rich history. Adjacent to the fountain, a discreet circular hut shelters the pump motor, a functional addition that allows its continued use.
In 2020, the Font de la Barra suffered a significant incident. A violent storm caused the surrounding ground to collapse, causing notable damage to one of its main walls. This wall, which dates from 1474, is a testament to the antiquity and resilience of this structure, which, despite natural challenges, remains an emblem of the heritage of Cretas and the Matarraña.
