Medieval cemetery of Cretas

The gardens of the Crown of Aragon in Cretas house a medieval cemetery of incalculable historical value. This site contains several steles, funerary monuments used to mark graves and commemorate the deceased during the Middle Ages.

The current space, recently opened to visitors, is situated on the original site of the cemetery, where it remained for centuries. However, between the 1930s and 1940s, the old cemetery was demolished and its remains relocated. The original location was subsequently rediscovered and restored, a crucial effort to preserve this important heritage.

The funerary steles date from the 12th to the 15th centuries, offering a fascinating window into the practices and beliefs of the medieval period in the Matarraña.

The conservation of these medieval steles is fundamental to understanding the history and heritage of Cretas. They not only offer a unique insight into the life and beliefs of the Middle Ages in the Matarraña region, but also represent an ongoing effort to safeguard our cultural inheritance.

The site has been meticulously signposted with information panels, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the rich history of this cemetery. Future expansion plans, which include the restoration of three additional steles recently discovered, ensure that this important site will continue to enrich the historical legacy of Cretas for generations to come.
