San Antonio chapel, Cretas

The San Antonio chapel in Cretas is a unique and representative construction of the Matarraña area, whose history is intertwined with the ancient defences of the town. Although it now functions as a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, its origins are far older and more functional.

Originally, this structure was nothing other than a passageway integrated into the walls surrounding the town. Until the 16th century, it was known simply as the Passageway of San Antonio. Over time, and as the needs of the village changed, it was transformed into one of the main gateways providing access to the town.

It was in the 18th century that its religious function was added, consecrating it to Saint Anthony of Padua, a saint deeply venerated for his ability to intercede in causes considered impossible. The chapel is distinguished by its access via a lateral staircase, and it is likely that, in the past, an exterior niche housed a figure of the patron saint, although it is currently empty. This transformation is a living testament to the rich tradition of gateway-chapels found in the Matarraña region.

The proximity of this chapel to the Casa Turull (a few metres away on Calle San Antonio) is no coincidence, as it was the lord of that house, Felicísimo Turull, who funded the works.

Today the tradition of opening the chapel doors during the saint's feast day, on 13 June, continues.
