The historic Aragonese measuring rod of Calaceite

The historic Aragonese measuring rod, jealously preserved in one of the pillars of the arcaded porches on the Plaza de España in Calaceite, represents an invaluable testament to the commercial history and ancient measurement practices of the region. Once used to calibrate goods traded between Catalan and Aragonese merchants, its presence takes us back to an era when precision in exchange was fundamental.

Its origin is intrinsically linked to the figure of the mostassaf or almotacén, a key official responsible for verifying weights and measures, combating fraud in the buying and selling of cereals and other products essential to daily life in the Matarraña.

The use of these traditional measures was a constant in many localities until recent times. Calaceite Town Hall has taken an admirable commitment to preserving this cultural heritage. At the Tourist Office (the old Casa Bruno), a display case has been set up housing a unique collection of antique weights and measures. This didactic exhibition allows visitors to explore and understand the ancestral measuring practices that shaped the local economy and society for centuries. The space is further enriched by a permanent exhibition of acclaimed local artist Teresa Jassá, complementing the cultural immersion offered by this emblematic venue.
