Medieval walls of Calaceite

Explore the vestiges of Calaceite's historical defences, where an ancient tower has been transformed into a home while preserving its original character at the heart of the Matarraña.

Vestiges of the medieval walls of Calaceite

Of the ancient medieval walls that once protected Calaceite, only a few vestiges survive today, principally visible in Calle Tejerías, an area traditionally known as 'davall la vila'. These discrete remains stand as silent witnesses to the defensive history of the town and the Matarraña comarca.

The singular Torre de Calaceite

Despite the disappearance of most of the walls, one of their original towers has managed to survive the passage of time. Known today as the Torre de Calaceite, this impressive square ashlar masonry structure has been ingeniously transformed and currently serves as a home, a fascinating example of adaptation and preservation of local heritage.

Architectural features of the tower

The tower features a characteristic round arch doorway built with large voussoirs that speak to its original robustness. Along its facades, balconies and windows have been carefully framed with ashlar blocks, adding a distinctive touch. Of particular note is a balcony on the second floor, adorned with stone corbels and an elaborate wrought-iron grille, which testifies to the craftsmanship of the period in the Matarraña.

Although its original parapet has been lost due to its conversion into a residence, the Torre de Calaceite retains a strong historical character. To the left of the main doorway, a small ashlar wall with battlements is visible which, by its appearance, seems to be a later addition, possibly an attempt to recreate or reinforce the original defensive image.

Did you know that part of Calaceite's walls became a home?

The Torre de Calaceite, one of the few surviving vestiges of the town's ancient medieval walls in the Matarraña, has endured through the centuries and been converted into a home, preserving its original ashlar masonry structure and historical features that tell us about its past.
