The Portal de Maella: history and transformation
The Portal de Maella, located at the northern entrance to the town of Calaceite, takes its name from the fact that it was the entry gate from the old road connecting to the town of Maella. Originally, it was one of the four town gates in the walls surrounding the town. In the 18th century, a raised Baroque-style chapel dedicated to the Virgen del Pilar was built on top of the gate, transforming its original defensive function into an essentially religious one.
