The Plaza Mayor or Plaza de España in Calaceite is a central and dynamic space in the town, characterised by its irregular and complex layout, as well as its beautiful arcaded porticos and covered-passage entrances. Although it is not located in the oldest part of the village, its historical and social significance is undeniable.
In old documents, this square was referred to as the plaza de “Baix”, distinguishing it from the now-disappeared Plaza de Arriba, where the old Gothic church once stood. For centuries this place has been an epicentre of activity, from the holding of markets under its porticos to the administration of public justice and community assemblies. In past times it even served as the venue for heifer races.
Today, the Plaza de España remains a vital hub, hosting the weekly market every Wednesday of the year, keeping it a vibrant and essential space in the life of Calaceite.

The Plaza de España in Calaceite has held several names throughout its history, reflecting the political and social events of each era. During the 18th century, it was known as the “Plaza del Sitjar”, owing to the underground silos that stored cereals as tributes. In the 19th century and early 20th century, it was simplified to “la Plaza” or “Plaza Mayor”. With the proclamation of the Republic in 1931, it was renamed “Plaza de la Constitución”. However, in 1938, with the arrival of Francoist troops, it adopted its current name: “Plaza de España”, although many Calaceitans still popularly call it simply la Plaça.
