Hermitage of San Cristóbal in Calaceite

The hermitage of San Cristóbal in Calaceite is a building of great historical and religious importance in the town. Although the current building is Baroque in style and dates from the 18th century, devotion to San Cristóbal in Calaceite goes back at least to the 14th century. Since then, the saint has been a significant presence in the life of the community and has given rise to numerous popular traditions.

The hermitage is a sturdy construction with ashlar masonry walls and consists of a single nave with a groin vault and side chapels. Its construction began in 1738, though it faced financial difficulties that delayed its completion. Before that, another building must already have existed, since in 1618 a house was built for a hermit, on top of which the current house attached to the hermitage was subsequently built.

The festival in his honour is held on the weekend closest to 10 July. It includes an evening dance at the hermitage, the blessing of vehicles at the door of the parish church, a midday meal at the hermitage, and an afternoon mass and dance, creating a festive and traditional atmosphere for the whole community.

From the surroundings of the hermitage, you can enjoy impressive views of the Puertos de Beceite massif and of several villages in the Matarraña and the Terra Alta. You can also make out the loma de San Antonio, which is home to an important Iberian settlement and a chapel dedicated to San Antonio Abad, offering a landscape that combines nature and history.
