The Casa de la Justicia of Calaceite
A Gothic architectural gem at the heart of the Matarraña region, facing the parish church, a witness to centuries of history.
The Casa de la Justicia: an emblematic building in Calaceite
The Casa de la Justicia is, without doubt, one of the most beautiful and representative buildings in Calaceite, strategically situated opposite the majestic parish church. It is distinguished by its imposing corner construction, presenting three meticulously worked ashlar masonry façades, a feature that gives it an unrivalled solidity and aesthetic quality.
Architecture and notable features
The building is structured around a ground-floor "lonja" (porticoed hall), two upper floors and an attic crowned by a pitched roof. The "lonja", its most distinctive element, opens onto the exterior with two elegant pointed arches resting on robust pilasters. Inside, one can observe a blind ogee arch and a finely carved Gothic keystone featuring a relief of the Assumption, details that evoke the rich history and medieval art of the region. The ceiling of this "lonja" is built with a timber beam structure, adding warmth and authenticity to the ensemble.
The main entrance to the dwelling is through a simple round arch doorway. On the first floor, a balcony stands out, resting on stone corbels adorned with very primitive carved heads, offering a touch of originality and antiquity. The plinth of the house is also carefully decorated with ashlar masonry, maintaining the aesthetic coherence of the ensemble. An architectural element of great value is the Gothic-style ajimezada window, a testament to the influence of this period on the construction.
On the upper floor, the Casa de la Justicia reveals three small openings that break the monotony of the façade, along with various gargoyles that not only fulfil a practical drainage function but also add interesting sculptural details and a distinctive character to this magnificent building.

This building stands out not only for its beauty but also for preserving original architectural elements such as the ajimezada window and the Gothic keystone with the relief of the Assumption, reflecting the cultural importance of Calaceite in the medieval period and its status as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC, Spanish heritage listing).
