Jail of Calaceite

The jail of Calaceite is housed within the town hall building, at the heart of the Conjunto Histórico-Artístico (listed historic ensemble) of the town, declared a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC, Spanish heritage listing). It accompanies other heritage elements of the municipal building and forms part of the tour through the local judicial memory of the Matarraña region.

Access to the old jail takes place within the guided tours organised by the Tourist Office of Calaceite. The visit allows you to discover, alongside the town hall and other singular spaces, this vestige of the old local prison system.

The town hall (casa consistorial) of Calaceite is a magnificent building constructed in the early 17th century, between 1609 and 1612, by the renowned stonemason Pedro Pizarro. This example of Renaissance architecture has not only served as an administrative centre but also as a witness to local history through its various functions.

On the ground floor, the building houses an impressive porticoed "lonja", a space of vital importance in the social and economic life of the era. The adjacent vestibule functions as an evocative exhibition space, displaying historical elements of great value such as:

The first floor, the main floor (piano nobile), is home to the Salón de Plenos. Here, there is an oratory built in 1613, a recently restored altar, and a wooden crucifix of the Santo Cristo, venerated in rain-prayer rogations. In addition, the town hall keeps a highly important archive with parchments and documents dating back to the 13th century, a treasure for understanding the evolution of the region.

Finally, the second floor is distinguished by its typical gallery with round arches, a distinctive feature of the civil architecture of the Matarraña area.

The penalties and statutes of the 17th century in Aragon reveal a severe judicial system, with references to the death penalty by hanging, punishments of flogging, the sentence of the galleys, and exile. Even punishments as brutal as dragging and quartering were authorised. It is no wonder that these jails inspired deep fear in the population.

The old jails of the Consistorio de Calaceite, on their first floor, have been transformed. Far from their original function, they now serve as a small exhibition and tribute to the prison history of the region. Information panels explain how justice worked in that era and tell the stories of those who were imprisoned within their walls.

Since the early modern period, towns in Aragon enjoyed the power to legislate and apply justice across a wide spectrum of matters, from criminal to economic, through their local statutes. These municipal laws, on occasion, held a higher rank than the regional fueros. The jails were, in this context, places where sanctions were applied and transgressors of these laws were detained. Today, this old jail is a key point on the Cárceles del Mezquín-Matarraña route, and can be visited through the guided tours of the Tourist Office of Calaceite, offering a fascinating window into the legal and social past of the Matarraña region.
