Portal and Chapel of San Roque

The chapel of San Roque stands on a gateway of the ancient walls that protected the town of Beceite. This covered passage is an exceptional example of architectural adaptation through the centuries, where the defensive function intertwines with religious devotion.

On its outer face, the portal features a round arch, robust and built with large dovelas of ashlar masonry that reflect its defensive origins. In a small hornacina, the image of the Saint is kept, protecting those who enter or leave the old town. In contrast, the inner side of the passage is lintel-framed, offering a more sober and functional appearance.

Between the structure of the two arches, a wooden floor serves as the base for the chapel. This rises with a square floor plan and is accessed through a side entrance. The interior of the chapel is crowned by an elegant bóveda de media naranja, which gives it a sense of spaciousness and solemnity.

A distinctive feature of this chapel is its balcony, framed beneath a round arch. It is decorated with large wooden doors and a turned wooden balustrade, adding a touch of grace and tradition to the whole. This space is not only an example of the architectural richness of Beceite, but also a testament to how defensive elements have evolved to become places of deep devotion and remarkable beauty, enriching the cultural heritage of the Matarraña region.
