Tips for your visit to Matarraña
Parking
The old town is pedestrianised. It is recommended to park in the lower area, near the river, to complete the route on foot.
Opening hours
Both the castle and the church have specific visiting hours. It is advisable to check the timetable in low season.
Gastronomy
Try the local pastries, such as Crespells (thin cakes) or the exquisite extra virgin olive oil from the area. Bajo Aragón designation of origin.
The Parrizal route
The first section of the Parrizal route follows an unpaved path. It is an 800 m walk, suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs with assistance. It follows a waymarked itinerary as a botanical trail, where the rock paintings of La Fenellassa are found — UNESCO World Heritage, belonging to Levantine schematic rock art.
On reaching the end of the first part of the excursion, at the Pla de la Mina del Parrizal, you can see the old installations used for transporting coal from the mines.
From the Pla de la Mina the excursion begins, linear (there and back by the same path). After these 800 metres, a wooden walkway comes into view and you follow the course of the river upstream to its source, until reaching the narrows — two vertical stone walls 200 metres long, 60 metres high and, at some points, 1 metre wide.
The most difficult sections are equipped with wooden walkways with handrails to avoid bathing, as this is completely prohibited throughout the route. The route cannot be done by bicycle, and dogs are not permitted.
