History and surroundings of the Calvary
The Calvary of Beceite, whose construction is estimated to date from the 18th century, although it underwent a major reconstruction in 1940 that gave it its current appearance, is a site of great religious and cultural importance in the town. It is set in a beautiful natural environment that invites reflection and the enjoyment of the landscape.
From this emblematic point, a trail begins its ascent to the hermitage of Santa Bárbara, following the route of the fourteen Stations of the Cross. Each station takes the form of pillars crowned with a cross and decorated with painted tiles that depict scenes of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, creating a path of devotion with unrivalled views.
What role does the Calvary play in the traditions of Beceite?
In the past, during Lent, a procession would set out from the church every Sunday afternoon, where the Stations of the Cross were prayed. This procession included a visit to the Calvary and other important points along the route. The Calvary is also traditionally used for the procession of the Santo Entierro held on Good Friday, and during the route, carraus are sounded, which are rattles or clappers. On the feast of San Juan, a procession also made its way to the hermitage of Santa Bárbara, where a mass was celebrated in honour of the Saint. Furthermore, in the 20th century, when mining was an important activity in the town, miners would climb to the hermitage on 4 December, the feast day of Santa Bárbara, to hold a procession with the image of the Saint. Today, its main use is as a panoramic viewpoint over the old town and its natural surroundings.
