Town hall of Beceite

The Casa Consistorial of Beceite stands on the Plaza Mayor and is one of the most representative buildings in the municipality. This space has been, from its very origins, the centre of the political, administrative and social life of the town.
Popular tradition holds that it was burned on several occasions and, most notably, during the first Carlist War 1833-1840. During the last restoration of the current main façade, the round arch of the main entrance was broken. The ground floor of the "lonja" (porticoed hall) preserves a small room that may well have served as a cell (dungeon), and the location of the current fishmonger's, near the "lonja", still serves the same purpose as in times past.

As was common in many villages, the town hall did not only fulfil administrative functions. Its interior housed various municipal departments and public services necessary for the daily life of the population. The main floor has historically housed the government chambers and town council meeting rooms, retaining its institutional function to this day.

The town hall premises have housed various public services over the years: the former schools, the medical centre and the public telephone.

The Plaza Mayor of Beceite, presided over by the town hall, continues to be the heart of the village. From this point the main streets of the historic quarter radiate out, and festive events, neighbourhood gatherings and cultural events are held here.

Thus, the Casa Consistorial is not merely an administrative building: it is a living witness to the history of Beceite and a key element of the collective identity of the town.
