Town hall of Arens de Lledó

With the onset of the early modern period, monumental Renaissance buildings were constructed in the towns of the Matarraña region as town halls (casa consistorial), as a symbol of the growth of municipal power at the expense of seigneurial and ecclesiastical authority. The town hall of Arens fits within this architectural movement, although its construction, already in the 17th century, was later and of more modest dimensions.

On the ground floor of the building, three round arches open outward. The one on the left, with larger dovelas, was the original main entrance. The arch on the right was opened at the end of the 20th century, making use of an earlier opening. On the side wall another arch is preserved, currently blocked up, which was probably open originally and formed part of a "lonja" (porticoed hall).

On this same ground floor there was once a small municipal jail which, during the 20th century, was converted into a barber's shop.

The first floor constitutes the main floor (piano nobile) and still houses the town hall offices today. The large corner running balcony, added after the original construction, stands out on this façade.

During the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), the municipal archive was burned and only the civil registry records could be saved.

The Plaza Mayor, where the town hall is located, is the nerve centre of the town. It is accessed through a covered passage known as "lo Cobert"; from this point the calle Mayor and two streets that climb towards the church depart.
